Same-day crowns are like traditional dental crowns, but they require only one appointment instead of two to complete the treatment process. That means your damaged tooth will be restored in just one visit! The restoration process involves cleaning and reshaping the tooth. At Smiles by Design, our dentist uses advanced CEREC technology to create accurate same-day crowns. Same-day crowns can help patients to avoid more invasive procedures when a tooth has become injured or decayed. Same-day crowns offer increased convenience to patients compared to traditional restorations; however, they are not always suitable for every patient’s needs. Patients should determine if they qualify for these treatments by speaking with their dentists about their needs.
Same-day crowns are called CEREC, or computer-aided design and computer-assisted manufacturing. This technology allows a dentist to custom fabricate a crown in about an hour or less. After the patient’s tooth has been prepared, the dentist will take a digital scan of the tooth and upload it to the software. The software will design the crown while the dentist waits. Once the crown is ready, the dentist can bond it to a patient’s tooth for a permanent restoration. Same-day crowns require fewer lab visits, and there is no need for a temporary restoration.
Same-day crowns are also referred to as CEREC® restorations and are made of ceramic material, allowing them to be color-matched to the rest of your teeth for a natural appearance. They can replace one or more teeth or protect a tooth with a cavity from further decay or infection. The procedure for same-day crowns is simple. First, the tooth is prepped to ensure the crown will fit perfectly over the existing tooth. Then, the CEREC software creates a 3D image of the tooth, allowing the technicians to design your dental crown before milling it in the office. Once the design is complete, the information is sent to an in-house milling machine that creates the custom restoration while you wait. Once your crown is ready, it is bonded and polished to match your existing teeth. The entire procedure is performed within a single office visit, so you do not have to wait weeks for your permanent restoration. After the procedure, you can eat and drink as usual. Still, it is essential to avoid biting down hard on the treated tooth for several days following the process to protect it and allow the bonding material to set fully. Same-day crowns provide patients with a durable and long-lasting solution to restoring missing teeth without sacrificing aesthetics or comfort.
